The Freedom of Homebirth
Choosing Homebirth with a Midwife
Choosing homebirth with a midwife gives a woman the freedom to give birth safely and naturally in the warmth and comfort of her home, surrounded by the people she loves. Throughout most of the world and most of history, women have labored and given birth with midwives. Only in the last few decades has it become common in the U.S. to give birth in a hospital setting with a doctor.
Birth is a natural process.
With a normal, healthy pregnancy, women can give birth safely and comfortably at home with a midwife. At a home birth, you are in control of your birth. Midwives trust in the birth process and the instincts of the birthing woman. You are free to choose where you labor and birth, what positions in which you want to labor, and who will be with you. The role of a midwife is to monitor labor and guide and support you safely through the birth process.
Picture your baby's birth just as you want it to be. Where are you most comfortable? Perhaps in the warmth of your own bedroom or family room. What makes you feel at ease? Your favorite music, candlelight, the view from your window, or maybe soaking in a hot tub. Whose face(s) do you want to see? Your partner's, your friends, your family's. You decide.
My midwifery care is personal and nurturing — before, during, and after your birth.
Before
At our regular and thorough prenatal checkups, we'll discuss healthy lifestyle choices, nutrition, and breastfeeding. My prenatal visits are structured to allow plenty of time for questions and answers. While I have attended hundreds of births, I know each woman's experience is unique. I will work with you to help make your birth all you hope for.
During
Birthing at home with our practice brings continuous hands-on attention throughout labor and birth. In addition to monitoring you and your baby's progress and health during labor, my assistants and I provide emotional support and guidance. There are no arbitrary rules or timetables about how you go through this process. My role is to support you in safely and gently birthing your baby your way.
After
After your baby is born, I will do a complete newborn evaluation to make sure everything is normal. My assistants and I stay with you, help you establish breastfeeding and see that you and your baby are resting comfortably. I'll then return to check on you and your baby 24 hours, 3 days, 10 days and 6 weeks after your birth.
